Hotel insurance news - Porter's £7,000 wine cellar theft

20 April 2010

An Edinburgh hotel has been spared having to make a hotel insurance claim for the loss £7,000 worth of alcohol following the arrest of a former employee and the recovery of fifteen bottles of high-end wine and spirits.

It is understood that on the night the porter handed in his resignation letter he used his security card to gain access to the five-star hotel's wine cellar and steal the booze.

However, the fact that he was caught in the act on an in-house CCTV camera means that the hotel's owners will not have to notify their hotel insurance providers of the incident.

An Edinburgh Court fiscal depute commented that the former employee "was a night porter at the hotel. He resigned on the date of the offence shortly after the commission of the theft. The theft came to light during a stock check three days later".

He added, "He was easily identified as the suspect on CCTV footage and through a log check of the security system."

It is just as well that the staff theft was noticed early or establishment's hotel insurance company could well be facing a costly claim.
